Christmas Tree Decorations
It’s the most wonderful time of the year to decorate your home in a fun and festive way. From sparkling garland to ornaments that add a unique touch to your tree, there are endless options when it comes to tree decorating.
Some families prefer themes and color schemes with their trees while others have a variety of decorations they want to use. While decorating a Christmas tree is completely up to your personal tastes, there are a few general rules of thumb to keep in mind. “Try to evenly space your ornaments. It can help to take a few steps back and evaluate your tree when you’re decorating,” Megan Wild, editor of Your Wild Home, said.
Here are some common ways people tend to decorate their trees for the holidays:
- White Christmas Tree Décor
- Small Christmas Tree Décor
- Rustic Christmas Tree Décor
- Traditional Christmas Tree Decor
White Christmas Tree Decorations
Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? If you have a more modern home, you may be drawn to the look of a white Christmas tree. They are a beautiful, festive décor item that can really provide the backdrop for ornaments and garland that really pops.
To get the right look, use clear lights instead of colors. Stick to a simple color scheme using gold as a base, incorporating green or red ornaments when possible. While simple globe ornaments are great, try to get more modern shapes as well. Some modern, white trees also use a method of draping garland from the top down instead of around. It’s a unique look! Stick with a simple star on top to complete the look.
Rustic Christmas Tree Decorations
If you like the rustic look, your Christmas tree is a great way to let your personal tastes shine. Using natural elements such as pinecones and wood ornaments is key here. Stay away from sparkling garland or tinsel and instead use a burlap ribbon to wrap your tree. Clear holiday lights work well here. If you want to incorporate some color, try to use red when possible. Use a wooden angel or star on top for the perfect addition.
Traditional Christmas Tree Decorations
For many, the holidays tend to fall back on a traditional look that’s been treasured for many years. This may even include a family event where a live tree is picked out and brought in the home together. A traditional tree is also a great place to incorporate tinsel and a light-up star atop the tree.
To get the look that stands the test of time, Wild suggests sticking with a holiday color scheme. “I’ve always been a fan of white lights, red ornaments, bows, and ribbon,” Wild said. “I think it’s a really timeless look, and really ties in the whole look of the holidays.”
Small Christmas Tree Decorations
If you have a small space, that doesn’t mean you have to skip the Christmas tree this year. Tabletop trees are a great way to decorate for the holidays without taking up too much space in your home. You can find small trees in almost any style. Some tabletop trees come pre-lit, but you may need to get a strand of lights to decorate. Stick with smaller size ornaments however to match the size of the tree. Use ribbon instead of garland to wrap your tree up nicely.
Incorporating Old & New Ornaments
If you’re anything like me, you have plenty of ornaments from years past. If you look closely enough at my tree, you might be able to spot the clay ornament I made in preschool. From ornaments celebrating a new baby to ones crafted lovingly by family members, these are the decorations that make trees unique and special. “I’ve always enjoyed looking back at ornaments I’ve made when I was younger,” Wild said. Whether it’s an art-deco macaroni piece or an old photo, they’re always full of memories!”
You don’t have to exclude these special decorations from your holiday décor if they don’t match exactly. Mix them into your décor with newer ornaments that help complete the look. It will make your tree that much more special and beautiful.
